The Marinduque Field Office held gift-giving, feeding and educational activity last December 2, 2010 at Tabionan Elementary School, Gasan, Marinduque. This is in celebration of DOLE’s 77th Anniversary, in line with the Department’s commitment for poverty alleviation and campaign against Illegal Trafficking in Persons and Child Labor. The Haplos ng DOLE sa mga Batang Mag-aaral Project gave slippers and school supplies to 276 pupils of the said school. Child Labor and Anti-Trafficking in Person policies and issues were also discussed to the pupils, teachers, PTA officers and Barangay Officials to develop awareness on the said campaign among the participants. The event was culminated by a get-together snack of all participants together with the DOLE staff to develop camaraderie and interaction with them.
Tabionan is a far-flung and mountainous barrio located in a 4th class municipality of Gasan, about 9 kilometers from the town proper and has a population of about 1,146 people. Out of the 262 households, 221 or 84.4% have income below poverty threshold and 188 or 71.8% below food threshold (CBMS Data 2005). Here, the day-to-day school activities of these pupils-beneficiaries will start and end with a long and arduous walk on a muddy, rocky and steep road, many of them barefooted, from their residence to the school and vice versa.
