DOLE MIMAROPA witnesses payment of benefits to displaced mine workers

To ensure that proper procedure and standard were met, DOLE MIMAROPA Chief of Technical Support and Services Division, Philip Ruga witnessed payment of benefits to the displaced workers of Berong Nickel Corporation (BNC).

Forty one (41) workers received their payment of benefits on February 17, 2017 with a total amount of P2.2M which covered workers’ last month salary, unused leave benefit, 13th month pay and separation pay.  The operation of BNC was suspended by DENR, thus this retrenchment.

Prior to payment of claims on said date, a short program was held inside BNC’s premises. BNC Operations Manager, Engr. Mark Zamora, delivered a somber speech on the work cessation of the recent displaced       workers.         “I          hope   na        sana, itong pinagdadaanan natin ay pansamantala lamang.” DOLE Palawan Field Office Head, Peter James Cortazar spoke regarding the mediation of DOLE, ensuring that the entire process of retrenchment and payment were done accordingly. He also added that the department aims to provide assistance through its Kabuhayan Program which were discussed thoroughly by Ms. Elnie Iligan, DOLE Palawan     DILEEP Focal Person.

Representatives from the provincial and municipal LGUs were also present on that day. Mr. Richard Rebote and Ms. Urduja Saspa and talked about the LGUs programs regarding employment and livelihood facilitation services through their nearest PESO. Ms. Saspa gave an inspirational talk about new opportunities and self-employment especially in the rural areas. Since the majority of the market in Quezon, Palawan is agricultural in nature, she accentuated “Balikan natin ang iniwan natin na trabaho bago ang pagmimina. Palaguin pa ito. Palakasin ang self-employment.”

After the brief orientation on the Kabuhayan Program, the participants filled up a DKIS form used by DOLE for profiling prospective beneficiaries. During the orientation, some participants already have plans as to what livelihood they will put up, something that will complement their skills and interests.

It has been reported that another two (2) displaced workers of BNC also received their payment of benefits on February 22, 2017 with a total amount of P181,646.42.
