Press Releases

As summer is on and posts about graduation ceremonies flood the social media, the Department of Labor and Employment has started the implementation of Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) and Government Internship Program (GIP) in Romblon for the year 2017.

The first quarter of the year kicked off a good start for the beneficiaries since the department expects to employ 1,429 young Filipinos under SPES and 61 fresh graduates for the Government Internship Program in Romblon province alone. In lieu of this, the DOLE Romblon Field Office had its successful orientation to 31 GIP beneficiaries from 8 municipalities, BLGU – Tan – agan, San Andres National High School and Romblon State University this April 2017. The same goes for the SPES beneficiaries, 556 whereof were oriented this April from 7 municipalities, one from an educational institution (Romblon State University) and a private institution (Romero – Servañez Accounting Firm).

The amended SPES Act raised the age limit from 15 to 25 years old to 15 to 30 years old. Also, SPES beneficiaries will now be entitled to social protection by virtue of an insurance coverage with the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) for a period of one (1) year.  Government Internship Program, on the other hand, provides an internship opportunity for college graduates/undergraduates who are pursuing a career in the government.

The orientation of SPES and GIP beneficiaries aims to familiarize the beneficiaries under the program that they availed. They were also advised of the benefits they will gain after availing the said program. Aside from providing the beneficiaries of employment for a certain amount of time, they are also given a chance to gain experience in serving the general public as they also familiarize themselves with the basic protocols and guidelines in the government offices.

Mr. Joram Santiago Forcado, a beneficiary of SPES mentioned in his Pre – Employment Survey Questionnaire, “I expect to learn a lot as well as enjoy my job. I think SPES can help me develop my sense of responsibility. My primary goal is to accomplish and finish my studies first to be able to help my family and give back the efforts they provided for me. I plan to work and be a responsible employee to establish a secure future.”

Mr. Jayvie Fabregas, one of the lucky government interns assigned in LGU – Ferrol expressed gratitude to the Department, “Being an intern will help me cultivate my attitude and knowledge even in a short period of six months. It will be a great help for me because I am provided with opportunities that will help me in the near future.”

Other municipalities in the province of Romblon are now complying their documentary requirements as they aim to implement SPES and GIP in their respective municipalities before the month ends.
