DOLE OrMin commences to organize Kasambahays in Calapan City

CALAPAN CITY, ORIENTAL MINDORO – Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Oriental Mindoro Field Office (OrMin FO) started to visit some areas within the City on 29 July 2020 to gather initial data of domestic workers registered in the barangays.

This effort aims to monitor the working conditions of kasambahays and to raise awareness of their rights, privileges and benefits as provided for under Republic Act 10361 otherwise known as the Domestic Workers Act or Batas Kasambahay.

Kasambahays or domestic workers are indispensable and essential workers especially in this time of pandemic because aside from doing household chores, they are the ones performing errands for their employers, thus their vulnerability to virus contamination.

DOLE MIMAROPA under the leadership of OIC Regional Director Albert E. Gutib is looking forward to institutionalize the programs and services of the Department for the benefit of these vulnerable workers and make a greater impact if they will be organized into workers’ association duly registered with the DOLE.

“We are currently working with our partners such as the local government units (LGUs), public employment service offices (PESOs), other national government agencies, and the employers to organize them into an association that will serve as our network to effectively and efficiently implement the provisions of the Batas Kasambahay,” Director Gutib said.

“The association will also serve as a link to hear the voices of the kasambahays and to empower them to participate in the policy making of the government,” Director Gutib added.
