DOLE grants P1 Million for Coconut Production in Romblon
STA. MARIA, ROMBLON - The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) awarded last August 12, 2020 an amount of One Million Pesos to the Local Government Unit of Sta. Maria (LGU Sta. Maria) as DOLE’s Accredited Co-Partner (ACP) for the establishment of refined, bleached, deodorized oil production project of Sta. Maria Coconut Farmers and Processing Association (SMCFPA) as the proponent.

The 77 farmers of Sta Maria established the SMCFPA and envisioned to produce high value added coconut products not only because of a wide range of coconut plantation in the said municipality but also because of a large market share in the entire province of Romblon and perhaps within the region.

As the association dreamed of a bigger business venture, they sought the support of DOLE Romblon Field Office for financial assistance under its DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP). Through the said grant, they can purchase additional raw materials and equipment with the objective of improving and boosting their current operation.

Representing the Regional Director Albert E. Gutib, Carlo B. Villaflores, the returning Provincial Director attended the awarding ceremony and said, “Congratulation to the members and officers of the SMCFPA for being the first producer of coconut oil in the Province of Romblon. We, in the department are praying for your success that will not only help the members to augment their source of living but also to place Sta. Maria as the coconut oil provider in the province, and eventually to other nearby provinces of the region.  DOLE and other government agencies are just here to assist you in realizing your dreams.”

Meanwhile, on a previous ceremony, the association received a processing equipment from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and pledged to continuously assist the association in terms of technology in producing quality cooking oil.

On the other hand, as to common service facility requirement, LGU Sta. Maria will provide building for the safe and security of the equipment and materials of the association. To mobilize the machineries, the ACP shall assist the SMCFPA for the power connection.

(On behalf of the SMCPFA members, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to DOLE, DOST and LGU for the assistance given to our association. Rest assured that we will nurture and take good care of the financial assistance as well as the trust you have given to our association. This is really a big help to us especially to the farmers as they will have an additional source of income once we started our operation).

Moreover, the association is seeking for another financial support from the other agencies for the provision of skills enhancement training and additional operating capital.

DOLE’s DILP or Kabuhayan program is considered as an important strategy towards transforming the vulnerable, marginalized informal workers into agents of change building community enterprises towards progress and development.
