DOLE OccMin settles almost P1 Million claims thru SEnA, benefits 17 workers

As COVID-19 proves to be not only a public health crisis but also an economic concern, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) MIMAROPA Region is true with its mission to protect the workers and uphold their welfare as the cases of retrenchment, closure of establishments, and claims for monetary benefits continue to arise.

On 30 September 2020, DOLE Occidental Mindoro Field Office (OccMin FO) facilitated the settlement of the monetary claims of 17 workers reaching the total amount of Php996,952.25 through the Single Entry Approach (SEnA).

The requesting parties are former employees of a grains trading company in San Jose who were terminated due to retrenchment, thus they filed request for assistance (RFA) before DOLE to claim separation pay, unpaid service incentive leave, prorated 13th-month pay including retirement benefits of Tatay Geo.1

SEnA desk officer Gener L. Francisco, adapting innovative ways of conference, facilitated the RFA wherein decision was reached after two (2) conferences while strictly observing the minimum health protocols as mandated.

Kuya Marc* who has been employed as driver in the company for 17 years expressed his gratefulness as he received his monetary benefits on that day. “Ako po, sampu ng aking mga kasamahan ay taos-pusong nagpapasalamat sa DOLE sa walang sawang pagtulong ninyo at pakikinig sa amin upang makuha namin ang aming pinaghirapan. Malaking tulong ito upang makapagsimula kaming muli sa aming pamumuhay, mabuhay po kayo,” he said. (On behalf of my fellow workers, I would like to thank DOLE for the untiring assistance for us to receive our hard earned money claims. This is really a big help for us to start a new beginning, long live for your department)

Meanwhile, Tatay Geo* who served as caretaker for 26 years also expressed his gratitude as he received his retirement benefits from the company. “Lubos ang pasasalamat ko at ng aking pamilya dahil natulungan kami ng DOLE upang makuha ko ang aking pinaghirapan sa loob ng mahabang taon”, he gratefully said. (I and my family would like to thank DOLE for its assistance to get what I have worked for so many years).

“No one could have predicted that this coronavirus outbreak would have had such far-reaching effect to both workers and employers. But on the bright side of all of these, we are thankful that these parties are still helping each other to settle the issues involved,” said DOLE OccMin Provincial Director Bernardo B. Toriano as he reported a total monetary settlement of P1,191,697.25 benefitting 24 workers in various establishments for the month of September.

Having a good performance, DOLE MIMAROPA OIC Regional Director Albert E. Gutib, lauded the prompt service of the team as he said “These admirable feedbacks from our clients pay our effort as public servants in serving the clients. Continue this culture in serving our people. Job well done!”

Moreover, Director Gutib mentioned that SEnA has paved the way for upholding workers’ rights amid these difficult times when the call for faster relief in settling issues involving wages and wage-related benefits through conciliation-mediation intervention arises.

SEnA is a reform measure to provide a speedy, impartial, inexpensive and accessible settlement procedure of all labor issues or conflicts to prevent such from maturing into actual labor case.
