Senior caretaker gets retirement pay thru SEnA

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused severe effects on the economy, including loss of jobs and income insecurity to the Filipino workforce.

As the extent of the crisis is still unfolding, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) MIMAROPA, more than ever, is resolved in strengthening workers protection and promote their welfare.

On 11 December 2020, DOLE Occidental Mindoro Field Office facilitated the settlement of a money claim of a senior citizen who worked as a caretaker in a grains company for almost 22 years. Through the Single Entry Approach (SEnA) program, he was able to claim his retirement benefits amounting to PhP172, 800.00.

The settlement was reached after three series of phone calls with the responding party facilitated by the DOLE SENA Desk Officer to prevent the face-to-face interaction and observe the minimum health protocols as mandated.

Tatay Rudy (not his real name), 63 years old, expressed his gratefulness as he received his fruits of hard labor on that day.

“Ako po ay lubos na nagpapasalamat sa DOLE sa malaking tulong na ito upang makuha ko ang aking pinaghirapan. Ngayong wala na akong trabaho, magagamit ko ito upang makapagsimula ng maliit na kabuhayan, mabuhay po kayo”, he said while showing his checks. (I am very grateful to DOLE for this great help to receive my money claim. As I don’t have any work right now, I can make use of this to start a small livelihood. Long live for your department).

For the first two weeks of December 2020, DOLE OccMin was able to assist three (3) workers with a total money claims of P220,515.06 with an average of seven days to settle.

Representing DOLE MIMAROPA Regional Director Atty. Joffrey M. Suyao, Occidental Mindoro Provincial Director Bernardo B. Toriano said, “This fast settlement of a labor issue adds to the mounting evidence of how effective the SEnA is. Considering the limitations brought by this pandemic, yet our office was able to explore all the possible solutions to settle all the requests for assistance and help our workers”, he said.

SEnA is an administrative approach that provides speedy, impartial, inexpensive, and accessible settlement procedure for all issues or complaints arising from employer-employee relations.
